Are you planning to install a new floor in your home or office? Then it is natural to also consider whether or not to install baseboards. The choice of baseboards is enormous, but there are certain elements involved that you might not immediately think of. One of these elements is the caulking of tall baseboards. Should you do this or not? And why would it even be necessary? In this blog, we, from flooring store Solza, will delve deeper into this.
Why are baseboards useful?
A baseboard fulfills various essential tasks in an interior. It is not only a visual addition to the whole but also a means to emphasize the desired living style. Whether you are aiming for a classic look or a more modern interior, the right baseboard can make all the difference. But apart from the visual aspect, a baseboard has even more functionalities. A tall baseboard provides a seamless transition between wall and floor, and it is also useful for concealing irregularities. Moreover, the baseboard acts as a protective buffer for the wall, providing extra protection against damage. A good example of this is a child in a walker; would you prefer it against the wall, or would you rather have a tall baseboard as a bumper that protects the wall?

Caulking the top of baseboards
When considering caulking the baseboards, you have a choice to caulk the top of the baseboards, the bottom of the baseboards, or perhaps both. To start, let's take a closer look at whether or not to caulk the top of the tall baseboards. In the image below, you can see the difference between a tall baseboard that has been caulked at the top and a tall baseboard that has not been caulked.
Visually much cleaner
As can be seen in the image, it looks much neater when the baseboards are properly caulked at the top. This way, there is no longer a gap visible between the baseboard and the wall, and thus the baseboards will stand out less or be less distracting.
Practical for moisture and dirt
Besides the visual effect that caulking the top of the tall baseboards creates on the floor, walls, and the entire room, caulking baseboards also has a practical advantage. By caulking, you seal the space behind the baseboard, preventing dirt and/or moisture from getting behind it. Quite handy!
