Buying carpet: what should you consider to make the right choice?

by Jorik van der Heide on Jan 20, 2026

Buying carpet seems simple, but in practice, many people start to doubt once they see different types, textures, and colors side by side. High pile or low pile? Light or dark? Suitable for the living room or for the bedroom? In this guide, we help you step-by-step in choosing the right carpet, so you can choose a floor that is not only beautiful but also practical and durable.

Why thorough comparison is so important when buying carpet

Carpet largely determines the atmosphere and comfort in your home. At the same time, it is a floor that you use daily and that is walked on a lot. By looking at quality, texture, and application beforehand, you prevent disappointments such as rapid wear, difficult maintenance, or an appearance that ultimately does not match your interior.

A good choice means years of living pleasure and less chance of short-term replacement.

1. Where will you lay the carpet?

The room largely determines which type of carpet is suitable. In a bedroom, the emphasis is often on comfort and warmth, while in a living room or on the stairs, durability is much more important. Therefore, always first consider the location where the carpet will be laid and how intensively that space is used.

Living Room

In the living room, preferably choose a durable quality with a dense pile structure. This helps to keep the floor beautiful longer, especially with daily use, playing children, or regular visitors.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, comfort often outweighs other factors. Soft carpet or a higher pile provides extra warmth and a quiet, luxurious look. Since the load is usually lower, you can focus more on ambiance here.

Stairs

For the stairs, a strong, compact pile is essential. The pivot points and the edges of steps receive a lot of stress. Therefore, choose a quality suitable for intensive use and also consider solid installation and finishing.

Home Office

In a home office, point load (chair wheels, office chair) often plays a role. Pay attention to whether the carpet is suitable for office chairs and possibly consider a protective mat.

2. High pile or low pile carpet?

Pile height is one of the biggest differences in carpet. It determines not only the appearance but also the maintenance and how suitable the carpet is for intensive use.

High Pile Carpet

High pile carpet feels extra soft and comfortable. It gives a warm, luxurious look and is popular in bedrooms and quiet living spaces. Keep in mind that impressions (e.g., from furniture legs) may be visible somewhat faster.

Low Pile Carpet

Low pile carpet is sleeker, more practical, and often easier to maintain. It is generally better suited for intensive use, such as in the living room or on the stairs. In doubt? Then low pile carpet is often the safest all-round choice.

3. Color and appearance

Color directly determines the atmosphere in your interior. Think not only about what you like but also about light incidence, furniture, wall colors, and how visible dirt and footprints are in daily life.

  • Light colors make a room optically larger and calmer.
  • Dark colors provide warmth and a luxurious, hotel-like appearance.
  • Melange colors often hide dirt and small stains better.
  • Natural tones are timeless and easy to combine.

4. Structure and design

Carpet is available in solid colors, but also with subtle structures or patterns. A structure can add extra depth and make small signs of wear less visible. In a busy interior, a calm floor often works best, while a subtle pattern can add character to a minimalist space.

5. Durability and quality

The quality of carpet is primarily determined by its density and pile weight. The denser and heavier the pile, the better the carpet resists daily use. When buying carpet, therefore, pay attention not only to its appearance but also to technical properties.

  • Pile weight
  • Fiber density
  • Usage classification
  • Manufacturer's warranty

6. Carpet and maintenance

Not every carpet is equally easy to maintain. Therefore, inquire (or check) beforehand how susceptible the carpet is to stains, whether it is suitable for pets, and how often deep cleaning is recommended. This way, you make a choice that suits your lifestyle.

7. Carpet with underfloor heating

Many modern carpets are suitable for underfloor heating, but not all. Pay attention to the thermal resistance (R-value): the lower, the better the heat is transmitted. If you have underfloor heating, it is wise to include this in your choice.

8. Carpet and allergies

Carpet can actually be beneficial for allergies, as it traps dust instead of letting it float through the air. The condition is that you vacuum regularly and occasionally deep clean the carpet so that dust does not accumulate in the fibers.

9. Budget: cheap vs. quality

Cheap carpet seems attractive, but it can wear out or discolor faster. It is often better to invest a little more in a quality that lasts longer and stays looking better. The right choice depends on the space and usage.

As a general guideline: good carpet often costs between €20 and €50 per m², depending on pile structure, quality, and appearance.

10. Common mistakes when buying carpet

With this checklist, you can avoid the most common mistakes:

  • Choosing based only on color, without considering use and durability.
  • Underestimating maintenance (especially with high pile carpet).
  • Not viewing a sample in your own lighting conditions.
  • Using the wrong subfloor or not properly preparing the surface.
  • Not taking into account pets, children, or intensive use.

11. Having carpet laid or laying it yourself?

Laying carpet neatly and smoothly requires experience. Especially for stairs and larger rooms, professional installation is recommended for the best result. This way, you avoid seams, loose edges, or a finish that quickly starts to move.

12. Buying carpet at Solza

At Solza, you will find a wide range of carpets in different styles, colors, and qualities. Whether you are looking for comfortable bedroom carpet, durable living room carpet, or strong stair covering: we are happy to help you make the right choice.

Still in doubt?
