Carpet maintenance: how to keep your floor beautiful and fresh

by Jorik van der Heide on Jan 15, 2026

Carpet is known for its warm appearance and comfortable feel, but many people are hesitant about its maintenance. Good news: with the right care, carpet can stay beautiful, fresh, and hygienic for years. In this guide, you’ll learn step-by-step how to best maintain your carpet, how to remove stains, and how to extend the lifespan of your flooring.

Why good carpet maintenance is so important

Carpet traps dust, dirt, and moisture. This is beneficial for acoustics and comfort, but it also means that regular maintenance is essential. By taking good care of your carpet, the pile will remain resilient longer, you'll prevent discoloration, and the floor will smell fresher. Moreover, you significantly extend the lifespan of your carpet, allowing you to enjoy your investment for a longer period.

Are you still wondering if carpet is right for your home? Then also read pros and cons of carpet .

Daily and weekly maintenance

The basics of carpet maintenance are simpler than many people think. It’s mostly about regularity: the better you keep daily dirt out, the less chance you have of dull spots, matted piles, and stubborn stains. Below you'll find the most important habits that make the biggest difference.

Regular vacuuming

Vacuum at least twice a week. In high-traffic areas such as the living room, hallway, or near the dining table, more frequent vacuuming is recommended. Preferably use a brush attachment or a setting suitable for carpet, so dirt is truly loosened from the pile. It's best to vacuum in multiple directions; this way, you'll better pick up dirt deeper in the carpet.

Occasionally moving furniture

Carpet can develop indentations over time in places where heavy furniture stands. By occasionally moving furniture a small distance, you prevent the pile from being permanently flattened. An extra tip: place felt or soft pads under legs to reduce point load.

Shoes off

Sand and small dirt act like sandpaper in the pile. By taking off your shoes (or using a good doormat), your carpet will stay beautiful longer. This is especially noticeable with light colors and carpet with a visible texture.

Cleaning carpet for stains

Accidents happen quickly. The most important thing when cleaning carpet is: act fast. The longer a stain sets, the greater the chance it will remain visible (or smell). Always try to blot first and avoid rubbing hard; this will only push dirt deeper into the fibers.

Step-by-step guide: removing stains

  1. Blot immediately with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel (do not rub).
  2. Use lukewarm water with a small amount of carpet cleaner (or a mild cleaner suitable for carpet).
  3. Work from the outside in to prevent spreading.
  4. Blot again with clean water (so no soap residue is left behind).
  5. Allow to dry thoroughly and gently comb up the pile if necessary with a brush.

Avoid aggressive cleaning agents, bleach, or all-purpose cleaners not suitable for carpet. These can damage the fibers, leave sticky residues, or cause discoloration.

Deep cleaning of carpet

In addition to daily maintenance, a deep clean is important to remove dirt that remains in the pile. Think of fine dust, skin oils, or cleaning product residues. Depending on use, this is a useful rhythm:

  • Normal use: 1× per year
  • Intensive use (family, many visitors, pets): 2× per year

You can use a carpet cleaner or hire a professional cleaning company. A professional cleaning often extracts more from the fibers and ensures that the carpet dries faster and more evenly. When cleaning yourself, be careful not to use too much water; too much moisture can lead to odors or draw dirt deeper into the backing.

Carpet and pets

Carpet can be perfectly combined with pets, provided you choose a durable quality and a pile structure that is easy to maintain. Regular vacuuming (preferably with an attachment suitable for hair) and occasional deep cleaning are usually sufficient to limit hair and odors. Extra tip: sand and grit under paws increase the risk of wear, so a good mat at the door really helps.

You can find more selection assistance in the carpet guide.

Carpet maintenance per room

Not every room requires the same maintenance. In some rooms, you mainly need comfort and freshness, while other areas encounter more dirt, moisture, and intensive use. Therefore, adapt your maintenance intelligently per location in the house.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, usage is usually lighter. Regular vacuuming is often sufficient to keep the carpet fresh. Since carpet is primarily chosen here for warmth and comfort, it also helps to occasionally air out and ventilate the room properly.

Living Room

The living room is often the most used space. Vacuum more frequently here and consider an annual (or semi-annual) deep cleaning, especially if there's a lot of foot traffic or if you have children. If necessary, use a rug protector under office chairs or heavy furniture.

Stairs

On the stairs, carpet experiences the most stress: turning points, edges, and treads wear out faster. Pay attention to timely maintenance and check if the carpet is still securely fastened. For stair covering, installation and finishing are extra important (think of nosings, risers, and sturdy fixation).

Home Office

In a home office, chair casters and sliding furniture play a big role. Consider a transparent protective mat under your desk area or choose a carpet quality suitable for intensive point use.

How to extend the life of carpet?

With a few simple habits, you can keep your carpet looking good longer. Much wear and tear is not caused by "use" but by sand and fine dirt that continues to rub in the fibers. By systematically limiting this, you maintain the appearance and resilience of the pile.

  • Use a good walk-off mat at the door (and vacuum it regularly too).
  • Vacuum in multiple directions, especially with high-pile carpet.
  • Protect from direct sunlight with curtains or blinds (prevents discoloration).
  • Move furniture occasionally to prevent indentations.
  • Schedule periodic deep cleaning (yourself or professionally).

Well-maintained carpet often lasts 10 to 15 years, depending on quality and intensity of use.

Common mistakes in carpet maintenance

Cleaning carpet can also go wrong. These are the mistakes we see most often — and that you can easily avoid:

  • Cleaning too wet: can cause odors and longer drying time.
  • Scrubbing hard: damages the fibers and often makes the spot more visible.
  • Incorrect products: aggressive cleaners can discolor or leave residues.
  • Not vacuuming enough: dirt continues to rub in the pile, leading to dull spots.
  • Letting stains set: makes stain removal more difficult and increases the chance of permanent damage.

When to replace carpet?

Sometimes cleaning is no longer enough. Carpet usually needs replacement when the pile remains structurally flat, bare spots appear, stubborn odors return, or when the floor visibly loses its resilience. If in doubt? Then it is often wise to compare your options and see which type of carpet best suits your situation.

View the carpet collection or first read the carpet guide for selection assistance.

Carpet maintenance summarized

Maintaining carpet is primarily a matter of regularity and smart action when stains occur. By frequent vacuuming, immediate stain treatment, and periodic deep cleaning, carpet remains comfortable, fresh, and beautiful. This way, you get the most out of your flooring — in appearance and lifespan.
